Dear valued member and industry stakeholder,

Welcome to the final Bulletin for 2020. And what a year it has been.  I think we would all agree that while we eagerly await the end of 2020 to close the door on arguably the toughest year in the industry’s history, we know only too well that the challenges for tourism will continue well into 2021 with international borders still firmly shut.

Our priority will be on maintaining crucial business support for those operators heavily reliant on international travel – the events of the past week demonstrate just how quickly things can change and we feel for the thousands of operators that are now again facing mass cancellations with domestic borders closing to NSW.

We must however remain optimistic about recovery so we’re staying very focused on our ‘Safe Travels’ project – with the vaccine still so uncertain and unpredictable,  we’re determined to put energy into solutions that will help travel in all its forms return in a managed, low-risk way. We are continuing to have this conversation with government and industry leaders and hope to see some traveller cohorts using a digital health passport in the new year. Obviously the recent cluster in NSW give us all concern and we are hopeful for a swift stop to new cases so we can resume our rebuild efforts.

To those that joined us for Virtual Meeting Place a couple of weeks ago, we hope you enjoyed the program and used the opportunity to reconnect with trade partners – thanks for all the positive feedback you’ve shared via our survey and remember the portal will remain open until the end of the year if you wish to connect via the Meeting Hub or watch conference session recordings.

It’s also a pleasure to congratulate and welcome our new Board members who were elected at the recent Annual General Meeting: Kathy Turner, GM at Goway Travel, Birgit Bourne, MD Insight Australia Travel and Richard Doyle, GM Global Sales & Marketing at Sealink Travel Group. Thanks to each of you for representing the members and broader industry as we look to a new future and rebooted international travel sector.

Keep an eye out for our ‘Looking Back, Moving Forward’ report which captures some of the highs and lows of 2020.

On behalf of the entire team at ATEC, Merry Christmas and all the best for a safe, happy and restful holiday season.

Peter Shelley
Managing Director

Welcome to the new Minister

ATEC is delighted to congratulate the Hon Dan Tehan MP on his appointment to the role of Minister for Trade, Tourism & Investment. Minister Tehan has been a long time supporter of the tourism industry, well known to many in his former role as the Chair of the Coalition Friends of Tourism group. We look forward to working with the Minister and his team on the all-important recovery strategy and positioning tourism as a key economic rebuilder.  We also welcome Hon Alex Hawke MP to the role of Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, another key portfolio for tourism development and policy.

Your new Board

We are thrilled to introduce your new Board after three new directors were elected at the recent AGM: Kathy Turner, GM at Goway Travel, Birgit Bourne, MD Insight Australia Travel and Richard Doyle, GM Global Sales & Marketing at Sealink Travel Group joined incumbent members Shahnaz Bhakshay, Director of International Sales at TFE Hotels, Ben Woodward, Director of Sales & Marketing at the CaPTA Group and Chris Teh, Managing Partner at Australia & Beyond Holidays.  Our sincere thanks to retiring Directors Jacqui Walshe, Managing Director at The Walshe Group/Southern Travelnet and Gary Paterson, Group General Manager AOT Inbound & Experience Tours Australia who stood down from the Board after having served three consecutive terms on the Board.  Their collective experience, expertise and contribution to the interests of ATEC, our members and the industry will be missed.

Distribution best practice

ATEC’s work on distribution best practice this year has been well received and we will continue to highlight the importance of maintaining positive commercial partnerships in 2021. Our focus will remain firmly on distribution as a core success factor as we draw closer to a restart of international travel and it will be critical that industry is ‘distribution ready’. Don’t forget to have your say on the revised membership code of business practice on the ATEC website. We also encourage you to support each other over this holiday season with payments and cancellations practices that have a partnership approach. With the covid situation still volatile, it’s important to respect distribution and your commercial partners wherever possible.

Travel agent support

Positive support measures from the government announced last week regarding tailored support for agents – including ITOs and those in the business of ‘tour arrangement services’.  ATEC sent a direct notice to all ITO and tour operator members with the details of the package and its associated criteria. Whilst we welcome the support package, the fact remains that international borders will remain closed for the foreseeable future and our energy will be laser-focused on the extension of JobKeeper beyond March.  For further information, please click here. Additional resources also below:

EMDG developments

ATEC continues to represent members via our involvement on the EMDG Design Working Group, which is helping government to craft the ‘Rules’ which will govern the new EMDG scheme. The draft Rules can be viewed here and ATEC lodged a submission last Friday highlighting some recommendations, queries and concerns.
