Australian tourism-industry doyen Sir Frank Moore has been afforded a rare honour – a Life Membership - with Australia’s peak inbound-tourism industry association, the Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC).
Sir Frank received his Life Membership from ATEC Chairman John King during a Gala Dinner held in Newcastle last week to conclude ATEC’s annual Symposium conference.
Mr King said a Life Membership was the highest honour his organisation could bestow upon a member of the tourism industry.
“Sir Frank Moore is a true giant of the Australian tourism industry,” Mr King said. “In tourism terms he put Queensland on the map and has been behind many of the major strategic changes which have helped to shape the Australian tourism industry over the past 20 years.”
“An ATEC life membership is awarded very rarely and is our way of thanking individuals whose life-long contribution to, and influence in advancing Australian tourism has been profound. Sir Frank more than qualifies in all respects.”
“On behalf of a grateful industry, thank you, Sir Frank. Australian tourism is stronger than it has ever been – and we couldn’t have done it without you,” said Mr King.
Sir Frank’s career saw him appointed as Chairman of the Queensland Tourist & Travel Corporation (QTTC), earned him a Knighthood and also appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia for his services to tourism.
Sir Frank has also been Chairman of the Australian Tourism Industry Association, the Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Tourism, the Tourism Forecasting Council, and is a member of the World Travel and Tourism Council.
“When he began, less than 5% of Australia's international flights landed in Queensland,” said Mr King. “Via the QTTC Sir Frank built airports, established resorts and boosted marketing efforts. As a result international tourist numbers tripled.”
During his career Sir Frank also constantly fought to widen the scope of knowledge and education in tourism. As chairman of the Australian Tourism Research Institute, he initiated the first major investments in tourism research and education at a university level.
Sir Frank has also been awarded honorary doctorates from James Cook and Griffith Universities, and was made a fellow of Southern Cross University for services to tourism education.
